Top 3 Reasons To Install a Home Generator Before Winter

It’s been all the talk, and everyone in the Birmingham area is well aware that this winter is set to be colder and wetter than average. Now is the time to be proactive by preparing for the harsh winter ahead with a home generator.

No one can forget Snowmaggedon of 2014. Many of us know the importance of packing a pair of boots, some bottled water, and a few snacks in the car in case of emergencies. At the same time, it’s crucial to prepare your home for any wild winter weather as well.

Ice and snow have the potential to cause power outages in the winter. One of the best ways to be prepared, aside from preparing your pipes, is by installing a standby home generator.

Reason #1: Enjoy your water supply, even if you have well water.

According to Alabama Public Health, around 800,000 people, or 20 percent of Alabamians, depend on private water supplies, such as wells, for drinking water.

If you receive your water supply from a private well, the pump that delivers water to the household won’t work during a power outage. Once you use the remaining water in the system, you won’t have any more until power is restored. While this may not be a problem immediately, this would obviously become a more serious issue if you were to lose power for an extended period.

Reason #2: Avoid throwing out countless dollars worth of food.

If the power goes out and you don’t have standby generator, the FDA recommends you discard any perishable food. Throw out meat, poultry, fish, eggs, or leftovers that have been at temperatures above 40° F for 2 hours or more. If temperatures are above 90º F for an hour, toss them.

Of course, it’s better to be safe than sorry. If there’s any question about whether or not these perishable foods are still good, it’s best to throw them out as they have the potential to result in sickness if eaten.

Reason #3: Remain safe and comfortable in your home.

While you may not be able to really put a price on having the ability to stay warm and comfortable in your home even when the power goes out, those who work from home probably can.

Along with staying comfortable and on task, a home generator also gives you the means to keep your security system on and your family safe. This may be especially important if the power goes out while you’re out of town.

A standby home generator offers your family several benefits. Most people would agree that installing one before the winter hits is a smart idea. Some might even say that keeping your family warm, safe and continuing on with their daily activities during a power outage is priceless.
